The Katha Chest

This story encourages us to think about how we keep memories alive and connect with our past. As Asiya explores the quilts in the katha chest she learns about the women in her family. It is a great text to use with the NSW History Syllabus Stage 1 outcome HT1-1 Present and Past Family Life.

It is also a great prompt when investigating immigration.

  • What do people take with them when they move to a new country?
  • How do they decide?
  • Why are artefacts important to us?
  • What happens when we are unable to take things with us?
  • How can we keep memories alive in a new place?

Encourage students to use a voice recording tool to capture a conversation with an elderly family member, as they discuss the connection they have to something the elderly relative owns.
