Comprehension
For children to comprehend they need vocabulary and prior knowledge. Wordless picture books offer the opportunity to focus in on both. Share a beautiful page from a wordless picture book such as The Last Zookeeper. Take time for some ‘pondering – slow looking’. As a group build a rich vocab bank and discuss how the image might relate to some prior knowledge. Is this a little like Noah’s Ark? Does the zoo look like Taronga’s elephant house?
