Compass Points – Thinking Routine

After sharing one of these beautiful books with your students, you might like to complete the compass points thinking routine. Display 4 posters around the room:

  • N (NEW): What was something they read about in the book that was new to them?
  • S (SURPRISED): What was something they discovered in the book that surprised them?
  • E (EXCITES): What was something they read about in the book that they are excited to learn more about?
  • W (WORRIES): What was something they discovered in the book that worries them?

Students write their thoughts on post-it notes and add them to the relevant poster. As a class rad and discuss the responses. You can learn more about this thinking routine on the Project Zero website – Compass Points_0.pdf (harvard.edu) Think about the purpose or focus of your lesson and decide on words that suit your lesson. For example, you may prefer need to know for N or suggestion for S.
