{"id":1810,"date":"2021-02-15T10:42:53","date_gmt":"2021-02-15T10:42:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mrsbarkerstearoom.com\/?p=1810"},"modified":"2021-02-15T20:34:38","modified_gmt":"2021-02-15T20:34:38","slug":"australia-day-so-what","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mrsbarkerstearoom.com\/?p=1810","title":{"rendered":"Australia Day &#8211; so what?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Many of us are familiar with the Stage 2 History Outcome HT2-1 that includes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Students  identify important Australian celebrations and commemorations and discuss their origins and significance in society<\/em> eg <em>Australia Day<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Last year my colleague Brigitta and I (inspired by Mark Treadwell) changed the way we approached this outcome. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Students completed a CSI Thinking Routine on what Australia Day meant to them personally. We then shared and compared responses.  (Learn more about this routine at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pz.harvard.edu\/sites\/default\/files\/Color%20Symbol%20Image_1.pdf\"><strong>Project Zero<\/strong><\/a>)  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"510\" height=\"344\" src=\"https:\/\/mrsbarkerstearoom.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Untitled-picture1-510x344.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1816\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mrsbarkerstearoom.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Untitled-picture1-510x344.png 510w, https:\/\/mrsbarkerstearoom.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Untitled-picture1-300x202.png 300w, https:\/\/mrsbarkerstearoom.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Untitled-picture1.png 642w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 510px) 100vw, 510px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Next. we reflected on the meaning of the words spoken in the video  <em>The Story<\/em> <em>of Australia.<\/em> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-vimeo wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-vimeo wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"The Story of Australia (subtitled)\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/491871907?dnt=1&amp;app_id=122963\" width=\"790\" height=\"444\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; fullscreen; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><figcaption>The Story of Australia ( www.australiday.org.au )<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Students formed the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">idea<\/span> that <strong> our personal history will influence how we feel about Australia Day<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> This lead to students wondering if that statement was true for all celebrations and memorials? <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The students researched other celebrations, considered their personal connection to them, and came to the understanding that  <strong>our personal history will influence how we feel about any celebration.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We finished our learning with the most powerful question&#8230;.<strong>so what?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Brigitta and I wanted to know what this new understanding meant for our students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We received the most insightful and powerful responses. The first step in change is recognising that we all have opinions and that we may see things from a different perspective. As the students move into Stage 3 we begin to look at ways of changing perspectives if it&#8217;s better for our community. These kids are our future leaders and politicians.
