Flat Stanley

Children love this classic tale by Jeff Brown. I have been sharing this story with Year 2 and linking it to their classwork on transport.

After listening to the story (especially Chapter 2 where Stanley is sent via the post to visit a friend)  the children discussed where in the world they would like to send Stanley. They used Google Earth to decide on a destination for Stanley, and saved an image of that location from the Google Earth site.

Next, each child coloured a Flat Stanley and took a photo of him which I downloaded to the school server. Using Microsoft Picture Manager tools the children removed the background from their Stanley photo.

Microsoft PowerPoint was then used to bring all the pieces together to create the final ‘Travel Diary’ entry. PowerPoint was chosen because:

  • the images are easy to move around on the slide
  • text may be inserted
  • the background may be coloured
  • the slide can be saved as a jpeg file, or as a pdf, making it suitable for use in a range of applications.

Students were encouraged to add extra facts or be creative and add a tale of adventure for Flat Stanley.
